JUMBO KING’S JUMBO PLANS

Mumbai. A snack that brings vivacity into scores of Mumbaites at any hour of the day is the much venerated vada pav. Millions of snack kiosks, canteens and food outlets sell them like hot cakes day in and day out. The vada is a tangy blend of boiled mashed potatoes flavored with fresh green coriander, garlic, mustard and cumin seeds coated with a crisp golden covering of gram flour. It is served along with soft bread with accompaniments like fried green chilies and dry garlic chutney to arrive at what we know as the perfect vada pav.

Although vada pav had been known for years as a quick tasty snack, there were skeptics who raised a health alarm on its fast-food status. The concerns were primarily towards the conditions in which vada pav were being prepared which were dubbed by these skeptics as unhygienic. Realizing this concern of cleanliness, the Jumbo King outlets came into picture in 2001. Brain child of Dheeraj Gupta, these outlets were designed on the lines of the famous burger place, McDonalds.

It was the first time that a branded chain of vada pav outlets with emphasis on hygiene was seen in the city. The vada pav served here also were different than regular ones. The breads were round like burger breads and the vada took the shape of a flat patty. The varieties presented also were intriguing. You could now have a Schezwan vada pav, a chole ussal vada pav, a vada pav with cheese or one served in brown bread. It is not only in the vicinity of stations that you will find this vada pav retail chain but also in places like Reliance Fresh, More, Spencer’s and Big Bazaar.

Today, seven years later and 45 stores in their kitty, the Jumbo King is going strong and growing by the day. There are plans of an investment to the tune of Rs 75 crores in order to start 550 stores and 250 kiosks throughout the country by 2011. The franchisee route is being seen as the most promising one for this purpose. Kiosks and company owned outlets also are going to be part of this expansion plan.

So, in the future of Jumbo King there are sure Jumbo things lined up for it.
